Protecting Team Culture in Difficult Times

Leadership means setting the tone—especially when emotions run high.

Yesterday, we posted about focusing on protecting yourself first—grounding yourself so you can lead with clarity and compassion during this time. Today, we’re moving to the next essential step: protecting the team culture.

In conversations with leaders over the past two days, we’ve heard a common refrain: feelings of overwhelm and uncertainty about where to start. We found The Management Center's resource, “Leading During Traumatic and Triggering Events,” particularly actionable. Over the next few posts, we’ll share practical/bite-sized steps and insights from this powerful resource, in hopes of supporting folks with forward motion from here - one action at a time.

🎯 Today’s Focus: Protect the Team Culture

💠 Action: Set and model clear boundaries on acceptable behavior. Encourage everyone on the team to ask themselves something like, “Is my language adding to a supportive culture?” or “Is my language reflective of our value of X?” If comments or jokes arise that downplay or make light of this week’s impact, step in with a direct reminder of this intention. Also, publicly affirm those who model this, reinforcing a respectful, safe space for all.

💡 Why This Matters Right Now:
-For the TEAM – This builds trust and ensures everyone feels respected and seen.
-For YOU as a Leader – Standing up for your team’s values reinforces your commitment and strengthens your resolve and integrity as a leader. Taking these actions clarifies your principles and deepens your influence.

Leading with empathy and conviction during challenging times speaks volumes.
